About Lamoral - your financial modelling expert

From the mountains of Bavaria through the halls of global finance to the shores of Northern NSW in 20 years.

Born and raised in the idyllic Southern German countryside, I spent a fair share of my youth in the Alps on skis, bikes and hiking. I left that tranquility behind to pursue a masters degree in business administration and a career in corporate finance. I had already been introduced to surfing early in my career when I married an Australian beauty so it was inevitable that Australia would play an important role in my future life and career decisions.

I took my first career steps with Banca Monte dei Paschi di Sienna in Paris and afterwards with the finance department of Daimler Benz North America in NYC, where I met my future wife. In 1999, I joined PwC in Berlin to learn the accounting ropes before transitioning into full-scale corporate finance with leading German mid-cap mergers & acquisitions (M&A) firm Ferber & Co. in Munich. At Ferber & Co. I advised numerous family businesses of the famed German Mittelstand as well as national and international private equity clients on many successful M&A transactions and capital raisings.

In 2006, we moved to Sydney where I joined the leading M&A house in Australia at the time, UBS Investment Bank, where I advised medium to large-sized industrial, medical and healthcare businesses as well as Australian private equity firms. In 2007, I helped charter new financial territory, when my team and I managed and closed what was the largest take-private in Australian history at the time, the acquisition of DCA Group by CVC.

2009 saw us moving back to Munich, Germany, where I joined a small private equity outfit with a focus on providing capital to small and medium-sized luxury and consumer brand businesses struggling with the effects of the GFC as well as investing in fintech start-ups. Two years later I received an offer I could not refuse from US mid-cap investment bank C.W. Downer & Co. in Frankfurt, where I spent the next four years advising European and UK clients on M&A transactions and capital raisings.

By the end of 2015, we decided to provide our four daughters with a countryside childhood, away from the capital cities, similar to the way in which my wife and I grew up, with some good surfing beaches thrown in for me. We moved back to Australia, to the beautiful North Coast of NSW near Coffs Harbour, where we found the ideal lifestyle. Starting my day with a dawn patrol surf session has become the new normal. So, don’t expect to reach me between 6am and 8am when I am in one of these “board meetings”.

I started providing transaction support services to my old and new Australian clients as a freelancer, performing different aspects of due diligence work and financial modelling in various transactions. In 2019, I decided to leave the corporate transaction business behind and focus entirely on the part of my work that had always inspired me the most, financial modelling.

Creating a complex but elegant simulation of the financial processes of a business or project can be very challenging but at the same time incredibly satisfying. Over the years I have seen many businesses winging it with their forecasting, flying half-blind and relying completely on gut feeling. This can work for simple business models but will cost a more complex and growing business missed opportunities, overlooked negative consequences and generally unrealised profits.

I named my business Mirbach Financial Modelling in honour of my late granduncle, Count Ladislaus v. Mirbach-Geldern-Egmont, an impressive, well-travelled gentleman from a different era.
